Summary South Korean retail giant Shinsegae Group has announced an ambitious $1 billion (approximately 1.4 trillion KRW) investment to back Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros., marking a dramatic move to integrate global entertainment intellectual property (IP) with major retail and leisure platforms.
The investment is being spearheaded by Shinsegae Property, the real estate and development affiliate behind South Korea's iconic 'Starfield' mega-malls. By partnering with the newly unified Hollywood powerhouse Paramount Skydance, Shinsegae plans to leverage marquee global franchises—including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, and Top Gun—across its expansive commercial ecosystems in South Korea.
A major centerpiece of this strategy involves Shinsegae’s upcoming 'Hwaseong Star Bay City' theme park project. By incorporating both Paramount and Warner Bros. universes, Shinsegae aims to elevate the destination into an internationally competitive attraction. In addition, existing and future Starfield complex shopping centers—such as Starfield, Starfield Market, and Starfield Village—will introduce interactive experience facilities and themed spaces powered by these legendary cinematic IPs.
Beyond brick-and-mortar entertainment, Shinsegae plans to tie its domestic retail network, including hypermarket giant E-mart and other online and offline affiliate memberships, directly to major streaming platforms like HBO Max and Paramount+, which collectively boast over 200 million global subscribers. Looking further ahead, the retail conglomerate also envisions co-producing original entertainment content alongside Paramount Skydance to establish itself as a premier content platform enterprise across the Asian market.
