Summary South Korean retail powerhouse Shinsegae Group is making a massive $1 billion (approximately 1.4 trillion KRW) push into Hollywood entertainment. On October 6, the conglomerate announced that its affiliate, Shinsegae Property, will participate as an indirect investor by purchasing newly issued shares in the Paramount Skydance-led acquisition of Warner Bros.
The strategic mega-investment aims to bridge traditional retail with global entertainment franchises. By integrating the powerhouse intellectual properties (IP) of Paramount and Warner Bros.—ranging from blockbusters like Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, and Top Gun to beloved fantasy and drama empires such as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones—Shinsegae seeks to build a next-generation cultural and experiential retail platform across Asia.
A primary destination for these Hollywood worlds will be Shinsegae's ambitious new venture, the Hwaseong International Theme Park (known as Hwaseong Starbay City). While Paramount had previously been named as the official global brand partner for the theme park, this new deal unlocks Warner Bros. franchises as well, allowing Shinsegae to build deeply immersive attractions, experiential zones, and themed spaces. Similar experiences and retail pop-ups are planned for Shinsegae’s widespread indoor mega-malls, including Starfield, Starfield Market, and Starfield Village.
Beyond physical destinations, Shinsegae is exploring digital and media synergies. The group plans to link retail memberships—including those across its ubiquitous discount hypermarket chain E-Mart and online platforms—with major streaming services HBO Max and Paramount+, which together boast over 200 million global subscribers. Looking further ahead, Shinsegae and Paramount Skydance Group are even considering co-producing original content to captivate audiences worldwide.
Following high-level talks between Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin and Skydance co-CEO David Ellison late last year, the company emphasized that this transaction represents more than a financial stake. Shinsegae views the investment as a decisive stepping stone to diversify its operations and establish itself as a dominant content and retail platform company across the broader Asian market.
